Music Man Dennis Waring Featured at New Arts Collective
Artrageus1 is reopening its doors at 57 Elliot St., Brattleboro, on July 3 at 5:00 p.m. as an arts collective, featuring the talent of local folks: handmade items by local artisans, interesting books by local authors, and intriguing music by local musicians. These creative individuals will work collaboratively to market and sell their work in Brattleboro and online. Artists and their work currently featured at Artrageus1 are mosaics by Susan Rosano, handcrafted bags and wallets by Kathleen Kennedy, jewelry by Allison Korn, functional wood sculpture by Gayle Marie Weitz, and books and musical instruments by Dennis Waring.
Shop owners Nick Biddle and Gayle Marie Weitz were attracted to Brattleboro for its abundant cultural offerings. After opening their gallery in October 2013 (featuring Weitz's cabinet sculptures), they heard much about the now-closed Windham Art Gallery cooperative. Then they witnessed strong public interest in a "pop-up store" opened temporarily last winter on Main Street by Jake Roberts and Jessica Weston. So, when local artist/author Susan Rosano suggested Artrageus1 become an arts co-op, Nick and Gayle (with the help of Susan Rosano and husband Dennis Waring) are doing just that.
The Artrageus1 Arts Collective opens with a bang for Friday's Gallery Walk with live music by "Bad to Be Good" — a mix of Eastern country and Northern blues. This original, Vermont-grown music will be performed by collective member Dennis Waring (sax) along with Marvin Bentley I (guitar/vocals), Marvin Bentley II (bass guitar), and Patrick Kelly (drums) at the Harmony Lot entrance to the store. In addition, visitors can meet some other members, see their work, enjoy refreshments, and check out the collective.
The Artrageus1 Arts Collective is seeking additional members. Membership is open to artists, musicians, and authors living within 50 miles of Brattleboro. There is a $20 monthly fee for artists plus 25% commission on sales, and a $20 yearly fee for authors/musicians plus 10% commission on sales — all of which goes to sustaining the collective. In addition, all members are expected to contribute some time to the running of the store. (Applications are available at the store and online at artrageus1.com.)
Each month different members from the collective will be highlighted. July features Dennis Waring, ethnomusicologist, instrument maker, educator, and performer. He has written six books on musical instruments and has traveled around the world twice by ship. His instrument-making workshops for all ages are a signature activity, and his DVD "From Trash to Tunes" has garnered international recognition. He invents and manufactures instruments of all kinds, some of which are for sale at Artrageus1. Comfortable with all styles of music, Dennis performs throughout the Northeast with various musical groups — for July's Gallery Walk with "Bad to Be Good."
Artrageus1 is open weekends (Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11 to 5), for Gallery Walks, and online at artrageus1.com. For more information call 802-490-2277 or email email@example.com.
