39th Putney Craft Tour on Thanksgiving Weekend

Enchanted Forest by Judy Hawkins

"Enchanted Forest" by Judy Hawkins"

Set on Thanksgiving Weekend for nearly four decades, the Putney Craft Tour has always given shoppers, visitors, and collectors another reason to be thankful. This year, two dozen renowned local artists open their studios to area residents and visitors to celebrate a love of food in addition to the love of cultural activities during a Craft, Culinary, and Performance Weekend in collaboration with Next Stage Arts Project and Sandglass Theatre. Restaurants offering a Putney Craft Tour lunch or dinner "special" include JD McCliment's Pub, Katy's Great Food Restaurant, Putney Diner, The Gleanery, Putney Food Co-op, and Putney General Store (all in Putney), and the Four Columns Artisan Restaurant in Newfane. Visitors can tour art studios during the day, then enjoy Putney Craft Tour deals at participating restaurants and a performance at night.

Putney is a wonderful craft-rich area, and the tour is an opportunity to meet 24 working artists and buy special one-of-a-kind gifts directly from the artists who made them: glassblowers, potters, jewelers, weavers, woodworkers, artisan cheesemakers, a custom bicycle maker, winemakers, encaustic artists, a "farm art" specialist in repurposing a surprising range of materials, and one artist who makes drums, rattles, lidded containers, masks, and more from gourds. Part of the fun is meandering through the beautiful countryside, following the map to find these prominent craftspeople, and viewing works where they are conceived and created.

The Tour has been named a Vermont Top Ten Winter Event for a fourth year and is also a 2017 Vermont Arts event enjoying promotional outreach by the Vermont Arts Council. Of particular note, it is the oldest continuous craft studio tour in North America.

The Tour runs on November 24, 25 & 26 from 10 to 5 daily. Start at The Gleanery Restaurant, 133 Main St., Putney, for info, maps, and a preview exhibition of the artisans' works. For further info, visit online at www.putneycrafts.com and www.facebook.com/putney-craft-tour.
